BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ANKARA -- Turkey on Wednesday confirmed 26,476 new COVID-19 cases, including 2,414 symptomatic patients, raising the total number of cases in the country to 4,955,594, according to the health ministry.

The death toll from the virus in Turkey rose by 356 to 41,883, while the total recoveries climbed to 4,589,501 after 35,464 more people recovered in the last 24 hours.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 574 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Wednesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 125,519.

The daily caseload was down from 676 in the previous day due to fewer virus tests on the Children's Day.

The daily number of infections hovered in triple figures since Nov. 8 last year due to small cluster infections in Seoul and its surrounding Gyeonggi province as well as imported cases.

QUITO -- Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health reported on Wednesday 1,806 new COVID-19 infections and 38 more deaths in the last 24 hours, for a total of 393,048 cases and 13,726 deaths.

Another 5,181 deaths are considered to be COVID-19 related, but not verified, according to the ministry.

The South American country is facing a rapid increase in infections, with hospitals at capacity and a high demand for oxygen for intensive care units.

TUNIS -- Tunisian Health Ministry on Wednesday reported 1,448 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections in the country to 315,600.

The death toll from the virus rose by 106 to 11,122 in Tunisia, and the total number of recoveries reached 269,653, the ministry said in a statement.

A total of 1,339,297 lab tests have been carried out in the country so far, it added.

SANTIAGO -- Chile's Health Ministry reported on Wednesday 3,791 new COVID-19 infections and 30 more deaths in a day, bringing the totals to 1,222,949 cases and 26,726 deaths.

Health Minster Enrique Paris said in a statement that 15 of the country's 16 regions have seen a decrease in cases in the last seven days.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland on Wednesday reported five new COVID-19 cases, all of which were imported, the National Health Commission said in its daily report on Thursday.

Of the cases, two each were reported in Sichuan and Yunnan, and one in Guangdong, the commission said.

HAVANA -- Cuba's Ministry of Public Health reported on Wednesday 1,010 new COVID-19 infections in the last day, bringing the total to 111,654, along with eight more deaths for a total of 694.

Forecasts point to a greater increase in the number of infections and deaths, the ministry's director of hygiene and epidemiology Francisco Duran said in his daily report.

NEW DELHI -- Eight Asiatic lions have tested positive for COVID-19 at a zoo in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, officials said Wednesday.

According to officials, the infected lions were recovering well and analysis of samples revealed the infection was not caused by a COVID-19 variant virus.

The infected lions have been isolated and due care and necessary treatment are provided to them.
