HAVANA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- The 8th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) opened Friday in Havana under the banner of generational continuity in leadership.
"This will be the Congress of Continuity, expressed in the gradual and orderly transition of the country's main responsibilities to the new generations," the second secretary of the Central Committee of PCC, Jose Ramon Machado, said in announcing the gathering in December.
Delegates from all over the country are attending the congress, which will conclude on Monday following analysis and discussions of the Conceptualization of the Cuban Economic and Social Model of Socialist Development, in short the conceptual elaboration of the country's future.
Party members will also review the results of the implementation of the Guidelines of the Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution, which serves as a roadmap for economic development, and other advances made since the 7th Congress in April 2016.
Similarly, the meeting will analyze "the functioning of the party, its connection to the people and ideological activity," especially by assessing the situation of the Union of Young Communists and other groups within the party.
The congress will end on April 19, a significant date on which Cuba will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the country's victory at Playa Giron and the defeat of U.S. invading forces.
