NEW DELHI -- At least five COVID-19 patients were killed early Friday in a devastating fire inside a hospital in India's western state of Gujarat, officials said.

The fire broke out inside the intensive care unit of Shivanand hospital in Rajkot district, about 237 km west of Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat. (India-COVID-19-Fire)

LONDON -- An online event, organized by the Chinese Consulate General in Manchester, was held Thursday to mark Friedrich Engels' 200th birthday, which falls on Saturday.

CARACAS -- Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza on Thursday ratified his country's formal request to join the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

"We want to express what we did at the beginning of the year in writing, the formal request for Venezuela to be part of the ASEAN Treaty of Amity and Cooperation," Arreaza said during the third day of the ASEAN Conference, which was held via video in Caracas. (Venezuela-ASEAN-Cooperation)

WINDHOEK -- Namibia has approved an upfront payment of 26.4 million Namibian dollars (1.7 million U.S. dollars) to the COVAX global COVID-19 vaccine distribution scheme, senior health ministry official Ben Nangombe told Xinhua Thursday.

Nangombe said the arid Southwest African nation plans to make the payment next week, which will give it access to coronavirus vaccines for 20 percent of its population. (Namibia-Vaccine)
