QUITO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador on Thursday reported a total of 98,343 cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection and 6,010 deaths from the disease since the start of the pandemic.

In the previous 24 hours, tests detected 1,233 new cases of infection and 26 more patients died of the disease, the Public Health Ministry said.

COVID-19 is the probable cause of another 3,545 deaths, but that has not been verified, the ministry said.

The north-central province of Pichincha, where the nation's capital Quito is located, is the worst hit by the pandemic, with 19,536 cases and 783 deaths.

The biggest outbreak is in Quito, the country's most populated city, which reported a total of 17,685 people have tested positive, after 453 new cases were detected in the previous 24-hour period.

The second-largest outbreak is in the southwest port city of Guayaquil, which has 12,314 cases.

Quito has seen a rebound in cases since lockdown measures were relaxed on June 3 to reactivate the economy.
