QUITO, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Football in Ecuador will return in July after a four-month coronavirus hiatus, officials said Wednesday.
The decision by the government's emergency operations committee allows clubs to resume training on June 10 ahead of the first division's scheduled restart on July 17.
Matches will be played behind closed doors and clubs must abide by strict biosafety protocols, government spokesman Juan Zapata said.
All organized sport was suspended in the Andean nation on March 15, four days after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic.
Ecuador has the highest level of coronavirus casualties per capita in Latin America with more than 3,400 deaths and over 40,000 confirmed cases.
