LA TRINIDAD Benguet, Nov. 6(PIA) - - The Department of Science and Technology(DOST), in partnership with the provincial government of Mountain Province, is all set for the 2019 Regional Science and Technology Week(RSTW) scheduled here from November 19 to 22.

With the theme "Science for the People: Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development," RSTW 2019 will showcase the latest innovations in technologies, products and research that can help achieve the country's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

DOST Cordillera Regional Director Nancy Bantog disclosed that the RSTW will include science, technology and innovation fora with topics on Partnership for the Goals - Cracking the Code for Sustainable Development (SDG 17); Industry, Innovation, Infrastructure - Protecting Technological Innovation (SDG 9); Decent Work and Economic Growth - Ensuring Business Continuity and Supporting Entrepreneurs with RDI Technologies (SDG 8), and Sustainable Cities and Communities - Managing Wastes with RDI Technologies (SDG 11).

DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Pena is expected to grace the opening program where two innovation projects will be launched.

"The Regional Research, Development and Innovation Management Information System" will be the first data base for research and development, inventions, innovations and S&T facilities developed/established in the region.

The other project, "Design and Piloting of a Very High Frequency (VHF) Provincial Radio Communication Network for Early Warning, Incident and Hazard Monitoring in Mountain Province", aims to address the usual connectivity problem on mountainous areas. It concerns connecting the towns of Paracelis and Bauko to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Command center in Bauko, Bantog explained.

Along with the DOST attached agencies and partner government offices and educational institutions, the RSTW will also showcase its regular activities such as S&T exhibits; Technology Bazaar; SETUP (Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program) Summit; DOST - SEI Workshop for students; S&T Quiz for elementary and secondary schools in Cordillera; Disaster Summit for Kids and a S&T Journalism Workshop for high school and college students.

For this year, the Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) will be held along with the RSTW.

This is third provincial hop of the RSTW with Kalinga hosting it in 2017 and Apayao in 2018.

It is also the primary goal of DOST to bring science closer to the people and make it as a driver of progress and development in every community, Bantog said. (JDP/CCD-PIA CAR)
