LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Oct. 15 (PIA) - - About 300 cooperative members are expected to attend the 9th Benguet Cooperative Convention on October 16 - 17, which fosters harmonious relationship among cooperative members and a venue for discussing issues and concerns and share best practices to improve their lot.
The event, carrying this year's National Cooperative Month theme, "Cooperatives: Partners for Building Resilient and Empowered Communities Towards a Better and Stronger Philippines," is in recognition of the vital contribution of cooperatives as drivers of economy.
Senator Cynthia Villar will serve as the guest of honor and speaker during the main activity on Wednesday at the Benguet Provincial Capitol covered court.
The first day of activity on Tuesday, (Oct. 16) will focus on gender and development, its legal basis, as an assessment tool for coop planning and mainstreaming it in coop policies to be presented by the Cooperative Development Authority(CDA).
Research results on cooperatives of the Saint Louis University and briefing of Benguet Electric Cooperative on Energy Efficiency and Conservation, Home Development Mutual Fund on its Programs and Services, Philippine Health (PhilHealth) Insurance on its Programs and Services, and Social Security System on agency Membership Benefits and Privileges will also be presented.
On Wednesday, a motorcade from the Provincial Capitol Covered Court to Buyagan then back to the Provincial Covered Court. will kick off the main program.
Aside from Villar, Benguet Congressman Ronald Cosalan and Governor Crescencio Pacalso will also deliver their messages while Benguet Provincial Cooperative Development Council (BPCDC) Chairperson Miguel Luma-ang will give his response. CDA - CAR Regional Director Franco Bawang Jr will give updates on cooperatives.
One of the highlights of the convention is the awarding of cooperatives with the best and innovative practices based on CDA guidelines . The awardees are the Benguet State University and Community Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BSUMPC) and Bokod Sulphur Spring MPC for Large category; Drivers Operators Employees Residents and other Sectors MPC (DOERS) for Medium category; and the Immaculate Conception Community MPC for the Small category.
BSUMPC, awarded second place Regional Gawad Parangal, is tagged as the first billionaire coop in the province with 50 percent increase in share capital.
The Bokod Sulphur Spring MPC is the the fastest growing coop in just four years attaining 81% gross revenue, 82% increase in share capital, 55% increase in members, and more than 100% increase in savings deposit.
The DOERS MPC pegged a 49 % increase in paid - up share capital and 55% increase in member's savings deposit. One of its innovative strategies is partnering with different remittance agencies like Unified Product Services and True Money. The coop's community commitment is sponsoring scholarship, livelihood training and conduct of community development program.
The Immaculate Conception Community MPC is an active community arm for disaster risk reduction management council in partnership with Philippine Misereor. Assistance to the community include rehabilitation of damaged green houses and potato seed storage and donation for reconstruction of burned houses.
The coop convention is spearheaded by the provincial government through the BPCDC , in coordination with La Trinidad local government.(JDP/SCA-PIA-CAR, Benguet)
